Before the Europeans went exploring for new land in the 1500s, settlements of Lucayan Indians could be found on Harbour Island Bahamas. The Lucayan Indians, however, were later enslaved by the Spaniards and set to work in the mines of South America.

Later on, English Puritans came to live in Harbour Island, hoping to escape religious persecution from their homeland. These Puritans began trading with other Puritan communities in the mainland United States, exchanging precious woods for goods and supplies.  These Harbour Island Puritans have by then started calling their new home Briland and themselves Brilanders.

Today, the main trade among Brilanders in Harbour Island Bahamas includes shipbuilding as well as producing tomatoes, citrus fruits and pineapples.
