Bahamas is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Florida, northeast of Cuba.  Having an area of 13,939 sq km, the Bahamas consist of a chain of 700 islands. Officially called as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, the capital is Nassau.  Long, flat coral formations form the terrain and the climate is tropical marine. The Bahamas Island got its independence from the UK in 1973.

With a population of 305,655, the people consists of 85 per cent blacks, 12 per cent white, and the Hispanic, Asian and others constitute 3 percent. 

Bahamas: National symbols

The Bahamian flag is a black equilateral triangle against the mast superimposed on a horizontal background made up of two colours on three equal stripes -- aquamarine, gold and aquamarine. While the black colour represents the vigour of a united people, the triangle represents the determination of the people to develop.

The Coat of Arms is the National Symbol, which symbolises marine life.  March on Bahamaland composed by Timothy Gibson is the national anthem. The Pledge Of Allegiance is the pledge that all school students take. The National song is God Bless Our Sunny Clime.
The National Tree of The Bahamas is Lignum Vitae, National Fish Blue Marlin, National Bird Flamingo and National flower is Yellow Elder.

Tourism: Bahamas added revenue

Tourism industry generates about 50 per cent of the total GDP and employs the largest workforce.  The Bahamas Island also gets revenue from the export of pharmaceuticals, rum, crawfish, refined petroleum products and cement. The bark of the Cascarilla tree is also exported, which adds to the national revenue.
