Pink Sands Beach in Harbour Island Bahamas

Pink Sands Beach in Harbour Island, Bahamas is known throughout the world as one of the best beaches on the planet. The Travel Channel, Condé Nast and other premier travel guides have placed this beach in their top list of beaches. Two things make Pink Sands Beach in Harbour Island, Bahamas such a gorgeous beach: its pink sand and its gentle waters.

What Makes Pink Sands Beach Pink?

The lovely pink sands of Pink Sands Beach in Harbour Island, Bahamas draws tourists from all over the world, and yet it is never crowded. This three-mile beach on the eastern coast of Harbour Island is so wide that there is room for everyone to be comfortable on the sand.

The color of Pink Sands Beach comes from the reddish pink shells of microscopic coral insects called Foraminifera. When these insects die, they leave behind their shells. Their shells are then crushed by the waves and brought to the shore to mix in with the sand, thus giving Pink Sand Beach its lovely hue.

Pink Sands Beach’s Gentle Waters

It is not just the color of the sand in Pink Sands Beach that makes it so famous. Tourists also love this beach for its gentle waves and calm waters.

Along the north side of Eleuthera is a jagged coral reef called the Devil’s Backbone. When the heavy surf rides toward Pink Sands Beach in Harbour Island, the Devil’s Backbone diverts it so that its strength is dispersed before it reaches the beach.

“Our featured resorts, Pink Sands and Coral Sands, are the only two that rest along the beautiful Pink Sand Beach of Harbour Island. To truly experience the world famous Pink Sands Beach, a stay at the Pink Sands or Coral Sands is a must.”
